AC condensate tray problem - emails 8/5/11

Our tray gave up last fall. I removed our tray and took it to a sheet metal shop (unfortunately I domore...n't remember where) where they made us a new one the same size. I remember thinking the ~$75 cost being quite reasonable. Once replaced, all worked well. All together this took some number of days.
Unfortunately you really don't want to be without AC right now.

hi, there are two separate issues with the air handler condensate problems. one is the pipe clogging and the other is the pan rusting out. if the pan is rusted, it should be pretty obvious from looking at the bottom. in any case, it should help to make sure the pipe is draining. you can locate the drain hose by looking underneath the sink in the nearest bathroom. you should see a flexible plastic hose attached to the drain from the sink. you can remove it and then try to blow into it or use some sort of blower or air pump to clear it. if you have someone stationed on a ladder in the hall they should be able to tell if air is coming through. if air can't be forced through, then that is a clue to your problem. HariNam has a good solution to the rusted pan problem. meantime, you should be able to use a shopvac, preferably a smaller one to clue out the pan to prevent the hose from clogging. you would need need to put a piece of smaller diameter hose or pipe into the end of the shopvac hose and duck tape it in place. then you can clean out the pan paying partivular attention to the area around the outlet.

Just one addendum to this advice. The tube that connects the heat exchanger/air handler to the
drain beneath the sink was not blocked. However, the 3 inch protrusion from the drain underneath
the sink that the tube connects to was blocked. You can fix this with a screw driver if you know it
might be a problem. John

They installed a new air conditioner and we had several problems with them. The outflow doesn't matmore...ch the ductwork so there are strange vibrations. Since the air handler was too heavy for them to lift, they took it apart which I heard them saying afterword had voided the warranty. The mis-wired it and ruined a bunch of our appliances. The air handler is super loud. After a year, I still get woken up with the sound.
